2002 Durango-100

The 1st Annual Durango-100 was in 2002 and brought about 50 riders from the Four Corners Region to enjoy the new event. Last year's ride attracted seasoned riders and those looking to experience the adventure of riding an interstate Century. The early start and clockwise course (all right turns) resulted in minimal issues with traffic. Thanks to the Colorado and New Mexico Highway Departments sweeping the shoulders of the route prior to the event, there were few flat tires.

The first half of the ride to Farmington was expectedly quick with the only noticeable hill being Farmington Hill coming out of Durango onto Florida Mesa. Most riders seemed to be amazed how fast they arrived in Farmington! The second half of the ride was slower with a gradual climb to Hesperus. (Note that the return to Durango from Red Mesa will be slightly different this year: we will turn right a Breen and ride down Wildcat Canyon rather than climbing 800' to Hesperus ... whew!).

Though the 2002 Durango-100 wasn't offically timed, the lead group finished in 4 hours 36 minutes (Dave Kensey, David Harris, Keith Ashmore, and Mike Clinton). Most of us took our time and enjoyed the scenic tour.

The 2002 Durango-100 was challenging and a lot of fun. The 2003 Durango-100 should be even better. Improvement include:

  • Additional riding options with the 84-mile loop and the 50-mile one-way to Farmington.
  • Additional signage on the route.
  • Additional water stops and more food.
  • Durango-100 event water bottles for participants.
  • Sag support.
